What is Velscope?
Velscope is a revolutionary device that allows us to identify early signs of oral cancer when a visual exam is not enough. This amazing technology uses fluorescence to illuminate areas within the mouth that could be signs of either cancerous or pre-cancerous lesions. Because oral cancer can be difficult to detect in its early stages, Velscope provides us with another way to offer early and more beneficial treatment if it is found.
Why would Velscope be needed?
Oral cancer can occur at any time and affect virtually anyone. However, certain lifestyle habits, like smoking and chewing tobacco, put you at significantly higher risk of developing this specific type of cancer. For this reason, the use of Velscope allows us to detect cancerous and even pre-cancerous lesions so that treatment is more effective. When you find cancer early on, treatment is easier and is able to work more effectively at actually eradicating the cancer.
Who is a candidate for Velscope?
If you’re a smoker or chew tobacco, we may recommend a Velscope screening. The screening is easy, quick and painless. It simply uses fluorescent light to help us identify unusual lesions and spots within the mouth. As an adult, you can request a Velscope screening at any time and we may recommend it at your checkup visits. Oral cancer screenings are the first step in providing you with the care that you need.
What can you expect when Velscope is being used?
We will use the handheld Velscope device to quickly scan the inside of your mouth. The device is painless and does not cause heat or discomfort when in use. It simply emanates a light glow so that we can find unusual lesions that wouldn’t be spotted with a typical examination. If we find an area that is questionable, we may recommend a biopsy and lab testing to determine if the lesion is cancerous. Not all unusual lesions or spots are cancerous, but it is always best to have them tested to put your mind at ease. With Velscope technology, we’re able to provide you with the advanced care that you deserve.
